I don't know picked up the same size jets from yamaha today ...tonight after work taking the carbs off to see what I have ind there and hopefully if I'm lucky I picked up the right ones and will be riding instead of driving tomorrow ...if not then tomorrow ill at least know what to get

Well, it is an XJ instead of an XS, so the 8 airbleed holes in the pilot jets are not for everyone. If it works, it works. No one can argue with success (except for bull-headed managers when they couldn't take credit, but I digress...)

Yes, it does make a difference. However I don't know if your carbs take bleed or non bleed.

Maybe a guru can chime in on that one??

I've checked the springs ...I can move by finger but alot easily by flat head..thanks

That is probably your problem, I believe there should be a decent amount of constant tension to keep them set, sort of like a lock washer.

Okay so I've read every single post here...have an 79 xs1100 standard...open pipes and pods...having the same issues with carbs...seems like I have to re sync my carbs every week or so ....one day runs perfect ..next day back fire with flame...or stuttering at low throttle ...will the same jetting work for me or do I have to experiment like you did ..bike is a dailey ride other than when its time to sync....luckly I'm close to home to deal withthe crappyness....and if it will work what size jets did u purchase exactly...from where...I belive wehave thesame cabs...

If your carbs keep going out of sync maybe the spring keeping tension on the sync screws are weak/gone?

So conclusion to this thread:
If you want to run open headers and pod filters,
Follow the jet guide!
4 over mains, 1 over pilots.
I have my pilot screws at 4 turns out.

THEN MAKE SURE YOUR GAS TANK FILLER CAP VENT SYSTEM ISN'T PLUGGED!!!!!!! Hahaha

Job well done, that's a good ending! Always a good reminder to not overlook small easy stuff. We all are guilty of that since it took 300 posts to figure this out!

Right on! That's about the best news I've had all day except for my new clutch springs showing up! Yeah, it's been one of those days.

It's happened to me and a lot of other folks, glad you got it fixed now put it back together and go ride somewhere!

Found/cleaned the vent holes,

Literally, runs PERFECT!!!!
I had to change plugs and put pilot screws at 4 turns, and she purrs, and HAULS ASSSSSSS!!!!!!

Now it's time for all the cosmetics, well before that, the brakes, and a steering damper, and new front rubber.


I seriously can't believe this entire time it has just been a clogged freaking vent hole!

before I uncloged It I went on one more test ride, and checked the fuel filter.

it was at the same level as the other, but I guess a vacuum was keeping it at that level and choking the carbs!!!

"Mmm, could be!" (munching on a carrot) but have you checked the fuel tank filler cap to see if the vent is plugged up?

If the vent's plugged the engine'll run and rev fine until you get on the road, then it'll pull a vacuum in the tank and basically run out of gas until it sits for a few minutes and the air pressure equalizes enough for the fuel to flow down to the carbs again.

That'd beat the heck out of changing jets again or messing up that pretty blue wiring.

Vent hole?!?! That could be it! I have noticed that sometimes my right hand side filter would run dry... messing with the petckock was the only thing that fixed it.... when I've been riding... I've so far neglected to see if that is happening -_- I really hope that is it so I can feel like a happy idiot!!!!
