  • xs750 Final Drive Mod Question

    Hello All

It looks like I am going to do a xs750 Final Drive Mod for my 79 1100F. However, after reading the instructions I have a question. What is the difference between a type 1 or type 2 xs750 Final Drive?

The type II is stronger, try to get one from an 850 which will be the stronger unit.

    3H3 owned since '06

Is there anything specific to look out for when buying a final drive?

See if you can find out if it is off a "low mile" bike. Other than that, turn the wheel side by hand to feel for any grinding or rough spots as you turn.
Most FD's are in decent shape but look for signs misuse such as rounded bolts, etc.
If you can find it, get the 850 FD, as it IS a little stronger than the 750.

See that Phillips screw at the bottom right of the flange?

That indicates a type II. Type 1 does not have that.

I have one off an 850 Midnight Special I bought off Geezer. He had saved it for a special project same as me and I dont think I am going to end up swapping (I like the snappier acceleration) . You can have it for what I gave for it - $65 shipped.

Keep in mind, while the 850 is stronger by a margin, it took years of flogging, HARD use and 50,000 miles+, as 3Phase did, to hurt his 750 FD which is what then lead to the discovery the 850 is marginally stronger.

Get the best you can for sure. FWIW, I am running a 750 FD as the second user of it, and won't be running out to find an 850 FD.

JW has a good thought, the bike has a bit more spirit with the stock FD, my thought would be I like being able to get through the intersection without having to shift as shifting is wasting time!

The lower RPM at highway speed is the main reason I did it. 3600 rpm at 60 mph vs 4000 rpm.

Take jwhughes up on it unless you can get lucky and find one that has already had the work done, as I was lucky in that respect and it was a plug and play at that point basically.
