voltage reg wiring

so in the process of fixing some fuel lines and leaks. i noticed that the wiring to my voltage rectifier was melted at the connector,all the wires where ok but the red wire was black and melted into the connector.replaced the wire spades and all ok. checked with multi meter and voltage was 14.0 volts at 2500rpm.so whats the red wire go too.why was just that wire burnt up.

sure looked clean. nice and tight. only the red wire was burned up.

It doesn't take much corrosion in a connection to cause this. The corrosion makes resistance and heat is the result of the power crossing the resistance just like in an electric heater. The result is the plug melts.

The heat also changes the temper in the terminal so afterward, the connection isn't as tight as before. Sometimes you have to replace the terminals as well as the plug to get a good connection.

And to ANSWER your question about the RED WIRE, it's the MAIN charging wire that puts the magic smoke back into your battery!The RECTIFIER converts the 3 sets of AC white wires current into DC and pushes it back into your battery. So it has lots of amps(~30) running thru it, and as Geezer said, too much corrosion caused excessive heat. Glad you found the problem and fixed it, this way your battery should stay charged better/fuller and you should have full voltage power to your harness!

thanks for replys.thanks t.c. for clarifing the red wire.had some suspicsions that somthing was wrong. testing the charging system confirmed some issues. before repairing the red wire battery voltage was 13.5 volts at 3000rpm. after repair voltage was 14.2 volts at 3000rpm. so time will tell. thanks again to all.
