  • D404 done at 8103 miles

I will let you all decide if 8103 miles is good life for a front tire on your bike, however I am not impressed with it.

No issues with the tire and performance, just have used plenty of other tire brands that give the same normal performance and get 12,000 miles or more on the front tires on other bikes I have owned.

I currently have a Shinko Raven 009 with over 12,500 miles and just touching the hair of Lincolns head on a penny test, so it's time to replace. That translates to about 2-2.5mm tread depth by actually measuring. This is on a ZRX 1200 that is run harder, stopped harder, cornered harder than my beloved 80SG.

The 404 only got to 8103 miles after doing a 150 mile ride this weekend. The D404 has 1.5mm left, so 8103 miles is more than it should have by any measure.

New Shinko 230 Tourmaster going on the SG this week, and it's a $55 tire compared to an $80 D404.

    Bye-bye 404...

I run the 230 Tourmaster front 110/90/19 with 40psi on both my XS's and they do wear well, don't cup, and are good in the rain, you should like them. I have 10K on one and it still has some left in it. YMMV

      bikerphil,

Thanks for the update. Just realized after this post, I am one post shy of 1000...

Nothing more worthy than reaching that milestone in a tire thread that I started not knowing I have contributed so much hot air all these years!

Or should I do it in an FD thread, or an oil thread, or a carb thread, wait... A fork brace thread or a CCT thread? Decisions, decisions, decisions.

      Woo-hoo!

Yeah, I'm done over-paying for Dunlop and other name-brand tires. I had a Shinko rear on my FZR600 that ran great and I just put a Shinko 712 on the front for $45 shipped. Very deep tread, rubber is nice and grippy, and it doesn't look too bad. IMO tires are tires and I'd rather have to change the tire once a year at $45 than once every 1 1/4 years at $110.

        Just my two cents.

79 F - gas tank refurb, headgasket change, straight pipes, late model carbs, virago lowering shocks, special headlight and gauges, TC fuse block, GSXR-1100 carbs (WIP)

Well, at 6,800mi. the 404 on front of the Venturer looks to have another 5K left on it. Not so much for the rear 404 at the wear bars.
Definitely not my first choice of tire, but I already knew what to expect and the $74front/$85rear locally at the time fit what little 'seat' time the bike gets. That, of course was some 4-5yrs. ago. Can't expect much from the lowest-end tire. Since somewhat limited in 17" sizes, plan of replacing both with Conti Go's, balanced and flat protection with Ride-On same as on my ST which run the Bridgestone BT23 radials.

Heck motoman, for as much as you ride that beatiful ST1100, the front tire on the Venturer must be hard as a rock from age, so that great tire life is understandable from a D404...

Well, I just checked my old D404 that have on my front....born on date 1706! I just received my Shinko 230 tourmaster 110/90 -19 via UPS today, ordered it this weekend!Motorcycle Superstore! I had just put that tire on when I had made the Tire change tip, and had a photo of my speedo showing ~19k miles(used speedo) I just checked it, and it shows 28K miles, so ~9k and ~8 years isn't too bad...but as you can see I don't ride that many miles a year!

So...it's time to change it just before the XS East rally at the end of May. I'm still running my Dunlop E3 on the rear, it's only a few years old and still has plenty of tread, but I'll probably switch to the Shinko when it finally wears out.

Got the 230 Tourmaster front on the 80SG today. I feel like I just found a shiny new penny, it looks purty all mounted up and full of tread just waiting' to be dulled up.

I had a set of Tourmasters on my bike and hated them. Hope you do better with them.

Had a D404 on a Special last summer, it came with the bike. Took one trip, approximately 2000 miles all told, and it was done.

Many bikes don't get ridden enough to wear the tires. The life of the rubber is usually 3 years. It is claimed that if you can push the rubber tread in with a finger nail then it is safe to ride and not too hard.
