  • Original parts on my 80 mns?

    Hi guys,

After reading up on here and studying pics I have a couple of questions regarding the originality of a some parts.
And also what are the best repairs for a few bits.

First one is fairly obvious, but I just want to check that there wasn't a model with black front indicators and chrome rear?

They have been changed at some point yes?

Next, and tying in with the first question, if the bike was knocked over and the indicators changed, did the mirrors get swapped as well? mine look different from others I have seen.

The grab rail at the rear, is it supposed to have black in the recess, or were some all gold?

    Repairs,
I know I will find the answer to the following questions on the site, but as I'm in type mode :-) I thought I'd ask.
What is the best repair for the tops of the carbs, the gold air filter side and the black on the mudguard?

And finally, have the pipes passed the stage of just cleaning, and what will they need to get them back to nice again?

Thanks in advance for any help.
    cheers
    Baz.

The turn signals are wrong, they should be black. Those mirrors are what mine had originaly, so i think that is right. My grab bar does have the black in it, and i don't know of a way clean the pipes withou damaging the black chrome. Just need to be gental.

Signal stalks should be black. Recess in grab rail, black. Your mirrors are correct for LG. I think Mack will be the go to guy for restoration tips on this one.

Baz, I have a 5K7 Sport which is similar to the MNS, I cleaned the light rust off my black chrome using a Brillo Pad and water, it attacked the rust and dirt but didn't touch the chrome.

Your hand grips are Honda type

          Hi Baz,
One of the challenges of asking what is original is that most of us are from north america and even between Canada and USA there are subtle difference. So what may look out of place for one area may have been normal in another. I think the norrors on yours are aftermarket. i have a set just like them in the garage. Do your have Yamaha markings or the three tuning forks or part number?
Look at the 2nd last picture in this listing http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...545#post438545
for what i believe are the normal for North America.

Those are 1981 mirrors. They are exactly like what is on my XS650, but black. The Baz bike mirrors are a match to my 1980 SG, but mine are chrome, his black.

This is an XS1100SF (1979). Note how the mirrors match the LG.

^^^same mirrors on mine too (79SF). I also used a brillo pad and water the other day on my regular chrome mufflers and WOW is all I could say. They looked new again. Just took of the rust to look brand new with no scuffing. I guess the rust just sits on top of the chrome because the chrome is like new under it.

                      Cheers guys,

                      So, indicators wrong, mirrors right.
Will try a gentle clean on the pipes with varying strength pads to see if anything begins to bring them up.

The gold on the air filter and carb tops that is damaged, is it paint or a coating?
And one last one, the black in the grab rail, is it paint on the gold, or an insert that mine may have lost?

Careful Baz, Scotchbrite and other abrasive pads will wreck the chrome, even kitchen pan scrubbing pads will, I know from experiences with other old bikes. The ONLY thing I ever found that was easy on the chrome but would shift the light rust were the Brillo Pads and water. And be gentle with them too.

A wad of aluminum foil lubricated with water will take the rust off and be gentle on the chrome. Some people swear by Coca-Cola as the lubricant.

In answer to your other question, the gold is a plating. I believe the black was anodized, not paint.
