  • refreshing the bike

So in a few weeks I'm going to be putting in new rings, cam chain, fixing the transmission dogs, checking clutch plates. With the engine this far apart is there anything else that I should be updating? I don't want to pull it apart again for awhile!

Might think about a set of heavy duty clutch springs while you have the side cover off. they are relatively cheap and will cure that nagging clutch slip we sometimes get.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Clean-up the head, maybe a quick clean of the valves, valve oil stem seal replacement, obvious valve lash check, new gaskets for your intake boots?

Yeah, that is something I probably should because it seems to slip quit a bit, but it's colder here so that may be the problem. I don't want to split the case though... .

I was gonna say "that requires splitting the case though . . ."

Yeah, splitting the cases is scary, but Tod/Trbig will tell you it's no big deal, and has posted a HOW TO on it. However, like you said, the cold weather/temps can cause starter clutch slippage. Where you live, you might want to 10-40 for winter, and have a strong battery...that's what also contributes to starter clutch slippage...weak rotation causes weak grip=slip!

I would definitely freshen up the valves....a good lapping along with as already stated, the oil seals. Checking the clutch plates.....also clean/deglaze the steels.

Okay, new cam chain, then either put on an ACCT or make the carriage bolt MCCT mod, but whichever, just get rid of the OEM CCT.
