  • Final drive mate up

    Hi all,
I have bet this is the 4-5th tire I have put on my bike. I just put a new one on and do not like the looks of the mate up on the final drive. I could put my little finger in the gap between them from through the rim.

Looking in the final drive female there is a sleve of some sort extending in a tad, and I tapped it a couple times with my eastwing and seems solid and should be there.

Just didnt like the mate up what am I missing?

          Final Drive Gap

Hi - I just saw you post. I have my wheel off at the moment and just checked it. Mine looks the same as yours, with the flange extending about 1/4 in. If I could figure out how, I'd post a photo that I just took of that flange, and of the gap, looking down on the left side of the wheel and drive assembly. But I don't see any icons for photos, only for links to URLs for images. Anyhow, there is a gap there, as you described. I think it is normal, although it might tighten up a bit when I get everything back together. I hope that helps.

              1. Did you have the bike in gear when installing the wheel?
2..Would the wheel lock up with bike in gear and turn freely when in neutral?

No I didnt have it in gear, and it seemed to work perfect, I put new brakes on it and rode prob 50 some miles, just kind of worried about the gap in the plastic shield on the wheel and the final drive, I can put my little finger in it, I am sure dirt and crap will get in....

Looking at photo 2, the grease pattern looks like the wheel had not engaged into the ring gear.

Make sure that you have all of the parts (spacers, etc.) installed. If you do there is nothing else to be done.

                    See breakdown:

                    http://www.nwvcp.com/pages/OemParts?...S1100SG_-_1980)

If link does not show breakdown, enter bike info and click on rear wheel to show all related parts particularly items 33 & 34.

Ok I will put it back together tom and thow a pic of what the gap looks like, when you take the tire off just a light tug takes it off the final drive, and there is nothing that falls off it, I usually just put some grease and give it a turn and push, it slips in line up the brake, push the axel through. I guess this brings up the question of on the axel were is it pinched how much do you all have outside

                          Hey Jeff,

I fixed your photo links...you got the right links but you used the URL code instead of the IMG codes.

Looking at your second photo, I see an irregularity in the large outer rubber seal/ring around the 7 o`clock position. Aside from putting fresh grease on the metal splines of the final drive and wheel assembly, you should also put fresh grease on that large outer rubber seal. It may be hanging up on that and not allowing it to fully seat the wheel against the final drive? There should be a small gap so that the white dust cover would not rub on the final drive, but not necessarily a full little finger's thickness!

                              Rear Drive Gap

I apologize for not being familiar with the photo posting process. I was not familiar with photobucket. I just went there and now I will try to provide the link to the photo of the gap in my rear drive. I just put it back together today and everything fits perfectly, with the gap shown.

                              http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/a...psc50957e1.jpg

I hope you can get to the photo.

**Editted: you were close, just use the tool/button in the posting window for IMAGES....not a web page link, and it will then display like what I added below your link.TC**
