  • Correct Pilot Jets

Following recommendation and looking for genuine Mikuni pilot jets 47.5 on Jet R Us site. Top of the page has BS 30/96...does this match the carbs on the XJ? Thanks.

I'm not positive about the XJ, but I believe the correct pilot jet size is 42.5.

I double checked the parts fiche and 47.5 is the correct pilot size for the XJ. I wasn't sure what the "BS 30/96" at the top of the site page with the jets pictured meant, wanted to make sure I was on the right page.

I think BS-?? is the model number of the Mikuni carburetors.

For example, my XS1100SF has model BS34-II model. The 'II' reflects "second generation" in this case.

The BS30/96 are the six-holed air bleed pilots. The VM's are the no air-bleed hole pilots I believe. 112.5's are stock mains for the XJ as those carbs had different metering rods. Also, with the YICS I believe the pilot jets were the VM style on the XJ carbs. 45's I believe were stock pilot jets.

            Hey there,

Well, the fine Yamaha XJ Service manual lists the pilots as 47.5, and the carbs as CV type of course. Here's a diagram from MikesXS that explains the difference between the VM style and BS style of pilot jets!

Surprisingly, this is the statement that they have below this diagram.

Note: BS 30/96 type Pilot Jets WITH Side bleed holes

and those without side bleed holes are completely interchangeable.
All I know is when I helped Mad-Maxim with his Xj, we pulled the pilots out, and they had the bleed holes, and we put bleed hole BS style jets back in. Regrettably one worked loose and fell out in the bowl causing some serious performance problems...but Davinci was able to find it and fix it and it then ran just fine!
