new tach and speedo?

I have a 79 special and would like to replace the speedo and tach.
Is there any thing out there that will fit?

If yours are trashed, I happen to have a 79 special with an intact insturement cluster, moving soon and have to clean the garage out!!

My speedo just died. Kind of funny. Driving down the turnpike and it started to fluctuate. Got off at the exit and could hear some whining from the speedo. The funny part was about half a mile later, the pointer snapped in half.

Got to look for a new speedo myself.

One question though, I am not going to be able to get a speedo with the same mileage. Is there a way to set it or deal with it another way. Also the 80 model did not have a 160 speedo. Mine does so I guess most likely it was replaced at least once. So there really is no way to know what the correct mileage is anyway. Maybe I can check with Florida for earlier titles.

The guy I bought the bike off of only had it about 8 months and the mileage difference from his title seemed right.


Anyone got advice on odometers?

I appreciate the offer but mine still work fine. I was looking for an after market part that would work. If nothing else i will just change the color of the light. I would love to hear any other options or ideas you guy might have, I feel a need to change them.

A few years ago I parked my SF, which had a handle bar mount windshield, incorrectly in the sun and it melted my odometer numbers. I took the thing apart and removed a couple pieces and managed to get the speedo working again. It was a real pain and not worth the hassle.

I'd suggest watching for ebay deals for stock instruments. A good addition is a bicycle computer. I've mounted several of them and the easiest to use is the Sigma Sport BC1200. There was a tech tip on this but I can't seem to find it. I epoxied a strong magnet (from a pickup tool) next to one of the bolts on the front brake rotor and added a little wire to the sensor and the unit has worked fine. They run ~$15 online.

Don't know what to suggest for a good aftermarket tach.

A speedo off just about any other Yamaha of the same vintage will work, the only differences being the top speed and the number if warning lights inside them. Other than that you are limited to a few small aftermarket units like the tiny ones sold by JC Whitney and Dennis Kirk. Most modern bikes use electronic units.

www.partsnmore.com has speedometers and tachs. They are under accesories on their site. I run a suntach on mine but I had to splice the 4 and 6 cyclinder posts to get the required 1 to 5 ratio... that is if mine is accurate.
