  • Speedo / Tach Cleaning

I would like to clean the inside of the glass on my speedo and tach. Only problem is that you can't get the metal ring off to remove the glass. I met a XS650 guy at T.W.O. last weekend that said he had a way to do this. His idea was: Take a Dremmel tool and cut the bottom part of the metal ring enough to spread it and take it off the speedo. When finnished, just put the ring back on and bend the ring back and seal with black TRV.

Has anyone done this? How did it work? What do you think?

I went through this on my speedo, and am still considering doing it on my tach. I didn't need to I found out, but I still ended up inside my speedo. anyway, I used a dremel to cut the metal ring around the outside (near the base of the ring, if the base were towards the back of the unit). Try to keep from tearing up the rubber gasket inside too bad. I cut mine all the way off, then replaced it, and repaired the cut with a mix of epoxy and baking soda (rather porous), then filled in with a mix of super glue and baking soda (a super way to fix things from cut open speedos to cracked props on an ultralight airplane). then I just sanded it all smooth, taped, and painted it. It looks perfect, and I didn't spend the time I wanted to on the sanding part. You have to look REALLY close to tell it was ever even altered.
Nothing like a ride on a straight 4.
