  • Brake lights

My brake light led is on in my instrument panel. I have checked the brake fluid. It was OK. Then I tested my brake lights. They don't work. The tail light works fine, just no brake light. I replaced the bulbs with two 2057 bulbs...still no brake lights and the led is on. The fuel light is also on and doesn't show the fuel level. Are these related? The bike is an '82 XJ1100. Thanks for the help. This sight rocks!

The XJ has more sensors and wiring than the XS, and can be more difficult to troubleshoot. Both master brake cylinders have fluid level sensors; check fluid in both units. Low fuel light will come on with about 3/4 of a gallon left in tank, and fuel level display will not show anything. Any chance you are just low on fuel? The XJ, like the XS, has a fuse block that is notoriously bad due to age of the 'fingers' that hold the fuses in place. Most XS/XJ owners have re-wired and/or replaced the original block; there are some Tech Tips posted on how to do this. If you have a 12v test light, check for voltage across fuses but not on the fuse cap!

All these problems are related in that the red warning light is multi-purpose and will come on when any one of the circuits (low battery fluid, low oil pressure, low brake fluid, low fuel level, no charging, others) is tripped by a sensor.

You might also try hitting the "Reset" button on the front of the console.

      Brake lights

Second master cylinder? There is one on the right hand handlebar, where is the other. As far as the fuel, I just filled up. Is there a separate fuse for the brake lights independent of the tail light?

        fuel level

I've found on mine that if the sending unit in tank gets rusty it doesn't work proper.I think it works by resistance.I have different tank on this season, now it works when full but all the bars disapear when i ride couple miles, sometime they show back up sometimes not.

          Brake Res.

pshaw The rear brake res. is on the right side between the V in the frame above the chrome cover for the swing arm. It has 3 6mm nuts on top of cover. Watch for dirt when you remove cover. bkr

            Fuel Tank Reading

Hey Chevy 454 My 84 XJ started to do the same thing as yours, Fill the tank ,go 2-3 KLM. bars would go away, warning light came on. Took out sender , float was off arm. Got the JB weld out ,filled and drilled the hole, replaced the float. No problem all last season. Ok so far this season.Just a thought. bkr

                brake lights

Well, the brake light now works. Two things, first the switch near the rear brake pedal wasn't attached and second it was bad, so I replaced it. I filled both master cylinders with fluid, but the BRK light is still on. At least the brake light works now. That was the important thing. I'll check the fuel sensor connection this evening. Thanks guys.

Possible the sensors in the M/C are bad. You should be able to trace the wires and put a jumper across them, bypassing the sensors.
