I always do as BA80 said.. .Spin engine and take out right side. I always leave the middle drive on since that yolk is really the only good hand-hold on the back of the engine.

James, I am not as burly as the other Midwest folks I guess, I was not about to lift the engine all by my lonesome.

As I was also in the middle of a resurrection project, I had it down to the engine sitting in the frame. So the swing arm, triple trees, wiring harness and everything else was off the bike. I removed the oil filter housing (filter goes with it). From there I laid the bike on the left side. I did put a piece of old carpeting on the garage floor under it, and I did block the engine to be somewhat level.

Then just pull the bolts out of the engine mounts, wiggle the frame to get the engine mounts out of the frame, and lift the frame off of it. Pretty simple and straight forward. Since I had split the cases, I had the middle drive off anyway, so I left it off on reassembly. Piece of cake getting the engine back into the frame without tearing up my paint work.

I used a similar method to Steve, jack stand under the front frame tube, and center stand. Have a helper, lean on the back of the frame and the front rocks up, helper removes the engine stand. Now rock it up off the center stand, and fold the center stand up. You do want to remove the center stand before removing the engine. At least I found it helpful.

I did mine all by my lonesome with a roll around floor jack and a milk crate. I did smash a finger though.

Never had to lift the engine. With the oil pan and pump off I raised it with the jack ,( with a board between the jack and engine) jimmied it to twist it right and slid it out the right side on the milk crate.

          Reversed procedure to install.

Now trbig probably ripped it out and tossed it across the garage to the bench without tools. He's funny that way though.

I laughed quite a bit reading that. I used the same method as Greg. Stupid middle drive caused some grief, but it worked out okay.

Yeah, the first time I did it I destroyed the driveline boot. Paid more attention after that.

I just got my engine back in a couple of months back – never posted. I was anxious to get it in so rather than wait for help, I used an engine hoist. It worked really great and only the necessary stuff had to come off.

Before Install (even the bags are still on).

Feeding the engine in the right side - the sling helped alot to keep the engine level.

Catch the oil pan with the floor jack and release the back strap to piviot the engine.

The wood from the right on the bottom keeps the engine off the frame while removing the sling.

                  And.....

1 hour for one guy and no backache or scratches!

I am planning to use some of this thread info next week. I plan to pull the engine from Old Red. Getting it out should be really easy because the cylinder head is already off, but I will be using this info to put it back in.
