Recently rebuilt carbs, removed airbox, re-jetted, installed Accel coils, bike ran great on top end, tach would go past 8500 easily in lower gears, but I had some sluggishness at lower rpm's and an intermittent miss. After lots of fiddleing I found a broken wire to one of my pickups (Imagine that!)
Anyhow, since I have been tinkering these last couple days, test riding to see if the problem was fixed, it wouldn't rev over 5500. Tach would climb quickly to about 4000, climb slowly to 5500 and stop, bike felt like it was surging a little and sounded like it was screaming! I was sure I had a fuel problem but couldn't find anything. Tonight I started looking at it again and saw a small spider inside my tach and after I got over my surprise I started thinking. What if? I grabbed my helmet, jumped on the bike and headed out to my local lonely, straight road. On the way I cranked it up in the lower gears and thought "It sure feels strong, just won't rev". Once I hit the long empty straight I opened it up through the gears. Had it up to 5500 in 5th gear (I thought) quick enough and the speedo said a little over 100 mph. Hmmm, sounds fast for 5500 rpm? I backed off and bumped the shifter, I was only in 4th! It appears the spider must have built a nest in the tach workings limiting its travel and the bike is revving fine, I'm just not used to it revving that fast! Boy do I feel like a DOLT!
