How much interest would there be out there for some NURB surface CAD of our motor? I have been thinking about at least surfacing the cases and some choice internals. I have a FARO laser line at work and a torn apart motor.

I would love to be able to do this completely free but we have to rent time at work (due to the amount of people who would use it free) I would probably ask for a donation to share with members.

Anyone have any interest? What parts would be wanted?

    Hey Joep,

For us non-machinists/engineers what would be the USE for these CAD diagrams, like in using a CNC machine to fabricate the parts? If so...then I would think we would want to scan parts that are No Longer Available from Yamaha....ie. the Star Plate/clutch throwout assembly.

The thing is, that to use the scanned data, you need a CNC machine or similar. And that leads to the cost of the machining to get the part. Which by the time your done has to compete with the used parts market out there. So I guess the question as always comes down to how much investment is required?

I would only be asking for small donations. As far as use...

I can see it being most beneficial to someone doing custom work, however it could also be used for mocking up ideas or machining parts that are very expensive or unavailable...

The other use would be part inspection. I would be willing to scan parts to see if they are still in round, in tolerance, or worn beyond use.

I was just trying to think of something I could offer based on my skills and resources. I am not trying to get rich off this...I just can't go broke either.

You mentioned the cost of machining, and that is an issue. However if you add In The fact that we normally charge 100 bucks an hour to do scanning and surfacing and we are on the cheap end then it really would be beneficial to certain people to have that info at a much lower cost.

I certainly appreciate what your offering, and did not mean to imply any greed or ill will on yourvpart at all. It is an amazing process that we could not have imagined was attainable when I was growing up.

It is funny that we watched shows like Star Trek and the 6 million dollar man as sci-fi, and now 90% of the things they showed are a reality.

There is only one thing I can think of that would be an item somone could actually even make a buck ot two off of. The front master cylinder has a reservoir and its not often you find one still in good shape. Brake fluid and sun have decayed the plastic and the main solution is to buy a generic assembly. I imagine a person who mapped it out and had someone with a CNC to cut them out could sell them as easily as John England sells the rear wheel bearings. So with the Star plate the brake reservoir and about 3 or four other things you might have something that eventually pays off but you have to have access to the CNC so I'd be searching for a partner if I were you.

Like I said I wasn't really trying to make money off this but that is a good idea and if I found a part like that I would be open to doing a small production run.

Luckily I am actually a cnc programmer so I have both bases covered

You make money off the project to pay for the other things on your mind. Personally if you ever do the front and rear master cylinder reservoirs I'd be interested.

I would take an early model standard master cylinder reservoir as well.

I had mine in CAD somewhere but I never got to machine it...lack of time on the CNC...always busy

One of those days. ..was gonna cut it out of aluminum...

I work in a CNC shop. I'm the welder there but I've had parts made by some of the guys. I may be interested for that info for future use. There's also a guy with a 3D printer at work and I'm looking at replicating some smaller gaskets and parts from plastic medium, starting with a choke lever. Yeah, start small lol.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

                          Master cyl resevoir

Yes the master cylinder res would be a GREAT idea, but does anyone know the correct size of the oring? It seems to be some kind of a secret as far as my experience is concerned .Yamaha dealers don't even know
