  • Oil cooler/Oil volume

I recently installed my oil cooler.
It has a themostat in the fuid lines, and only sends oil up to the cooler after the engine is warm.
I thought about adding to the volume of oil that I put in the case, to allow for what will be in the lines and cooler.
If I do that though, in theory, I would have more than desired in the case until the thermostat opens.
Am I being anal, or is that an issue?
    What have others done?
    TIA

    Over Full Oil

Mike, truly think that you will OK. When I am going on a trip I will change the oil and put in the whole jug (3.78 liters). .78 liter over filled without any problems. Also means I go at least a 1000km before having to top up.

      Overfilling

Overfilling can be a problem because the crankshaft counterweights can cause the oil to foam from the carnk whipping around in it. This is called windage, I believe. It's like making whipped cream, and the oil pump will not pump a foam, and there for it can cavitate, and there will be oil starvation at the pump. You don't want that. I have an oil cooler on my bike, and the Clymer manual says not to add extra oil to the crankcase. The oil will flow back into the crankcase when the engine is turned off. While it's running, there won't be that much oil actually in the lines and cooler, and it won't cause a low oil condition while it's running.
