I think "snap" is a very relative term here. The slide should be pushed down by the spring with very little friction stopping it. But they will not go down fast and hard enough to here them hit at the bottom.
As Nate indicated, if you hold the slide up and then seal off the oblong opening in the inlet bell. The slide should go down very slowly, quite noticeably slower than with the bell open.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

sounds like needle hangs up in emulsion tubes...
but going back to original post, first time I cleaned my carbs, I had same issue, and ruined my brand new K&N air filter
problem was pins for floats had little burrs on them, make sire floats and pins are smooth, that's my .02Nick

All floats are not the same.
This one is typical aftermarket.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find a good picture of the real deal. Look at this one.
Look at where the pivot pin goes through. Notice the frame is wrapped around the tiny pipe. A genuine Mikuni pin will not hang up in there. That was one of the issues I had. One of the floats was sticking on the pin.Marty (in Mississippi)

Repairs ongoing but good progress
Thanks again to everyone and those who have posted since I last was here, all the suggestions you gave were very helpful and made me realise just how careful we need to be when you get a restoration project!
The issues uncovered as a result were: the float pin was indeed sticking slightly and this was due to deposits of gunk inside the tube and at the edges even though it is actually an original, I thought I had nailed it at this point and re-assembled only to find (on the bench) that the carb was yet again not closing. I cleaned the edges of the gasket too to make sure and still same. I could not see any other issue so checked the float as suggested for leaks but it was fine. I decided to remove the float valve and holder with o-ring (which were brand new from georgefix) and hey presto all seems ok for now. I am now re-checking all of them fully for all these issues and all your suggestions again but looks like it will be ok. I guess we should not assume everything is perfect when we get them even new ones! I have now replaced the automotive lines (rubbish) with tygon-type line which I got cheap afterall and our old friend the octy is back in its rightful place doing what it was put there for!!! - Again, you have all been a hugh help to me and my thanks and kudos go to this forum. (Can you send some sunny weather too please?)
Best wishes,

I'm glad you're in business with the carburetors and if the ignition is kept dry, your bike will run fine in the rain.Marty (in Mississippi)
