    Any difference between shim specs on an 81 special and a 78 standard?

    You mean clearances? Yes

    The 78 has a wider exhaust clearance. Different cam.

    Correction........intake is wider.

      Yes and no..... In '80 Yamaha tightened the spec on the intakes by .002" to reduce valvetrain noise. Upside, the motor runs slightly quieter. Downside, the intakes will need adjusting more often. You can run either spec in any motor, you just need to decide if the shorter maintenance interval is worth it for you....

        Do either of you have the specs for an 81 special? Going out to do WJWs shims tomorrow but the only books I have are for my E.

          Intake (since 1980) 0.004-0.006 in.
          (0.11-0.15mm)
          Exhaust (All years) 0.008-0.010 in.
          (0.21-0.25mm)

            Thanks guys. Will have to see which way Bill wants to do them. Im all for a little noisier if it means doing it less often.
