    will 1978 xs1100 exhaust pipes fit on an 1980 xs1100 or a 1982 xj1100?

Not as a direct bolt-on for the XJ and if the '80 is a special, same caveat. But it can be made to fit....
    Look here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37191

You'll have to fabricate a bracket to bridge the gap between the 'standard' muffler and the Special/XJ footpeg mount. Another issue will be that the mufflers will block removal of the rear axle unless you have the standard's 'tire changing cable' (very hard to find these days) or disconnect the shocks or drop the exhaust. The side/centerstands are different between the two exhaust types too as noted, you'll need the 'standard' rubber bumper for the sidestand or it'll vibrate and drive you crazy (and maybe wear a hole in the muffler). But the semi-biggy is the '78-79 Standard exhaust used a longer threaded stud in the head to attach the head pipes, so these will be too short on the later motors. The studs can be troublesome to change, use heat/penetrating oil/patience when removing so you don't break any.

All of this assumes a OEM exhaust. If it's aftermarket, probably not all of these issues will be present, but there may be some slightly different ones...
