Hi all I just bought a 1982 Maxim 1100 and they say it was only made the one year. Can anyone tell me why it was only made in 82? Or do they mean it was only made in the USA in 82?

Always good to see another XJ owner on the list!
While the XJ is similar in many respects to the XS, particularly to the '81H, it does have wiring, carb, cosmetic, and electrical differences. If you plan to do your own work it would be best to get either the factory shop manual or a CD with the manual on it from one of our list members, Rockjoc.
Welcome to the list!Jerry Fields

Part number for the factory service manual is LIT-11616-02-78. A dealer should be able to get one. I paid around $35.00 for mine, but they may have gone up since 2000. A good place to check is Zanotti Motors, address listed in the Sources page in Tech Tips. Niether Clymers or Haynes made an XJ specific manual, so the factory manual is your only option for a printed book. They also come up from time to time on ebay, but not as aften as the XS version.
Info on Rockjoc's CD follows:

XS/XJ 1100 CD-ROM
XSive Rob Mills has done an incredible job compiling on CD ROM an encyclopedic collection of XS/XJ 1100 factory and aftermarket manuals, and microfiche. What follows is his description.
The CD contains 1250+ pages and is ~600 MB. All the files are in the root directory of the CD so it should work well on both PC and Mac systems. An internet browser and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader are required for navigating the indexes. Topics included on the CD are: (* = new in this edition)
1978 E model Factory Service Manual
1979 F model supplement
1979 SF model supplement
1980 G model supplement
1980 SG model supplement
1981 H model supplement
1981 SH model supplement
1981 SG model supplement
Multilingual Shaft drive manual
1982 XJ Factory Service Manual
*1982 XJ parts microfiche
*1979 SF model parts microfiche
*1980 LG model parts microfiche
1981 H model parts microfiche
1981 SH model parts microfiche
*1980 LG model owners manual
*Vetter Fairing Manual and Supplements
*Wiring diagrams for all models
The CDs won't have much for labeling and may be shipped in recycled jewel cases.
The price is $10.00 US (includes postage) and, since this a NON-PROFIT enterprise, all money over the cost of production will be donated to the Gallatin Valley Humane Society. If you want to send more it will be contributed directly. This animal shelter has a non-kill policy and does a fantastic job finding homes for the critters.
To order:
-- PLEASE send an email to rockjok@imt.net with your request and complete shipping address. (I use these for labels and order tracking)
-- Wait until you get an email reply before sending payment, sometimes I'm out of town for a couple weeks at a time.
-- Then include your shipping address and email address with your payment. (Folks outside the US may want to chance sending cash rather than spending a bunch extra on an international money order). I have received money orders with no name or address on them - that makes it hard to know who to send the CD to!
-- If you haven't received the CD in a reasonable amount of time after sending your payment(10-12 days?), email me and I'll try and figure out what went wrong.

In my opinion this is a "must-have" reference! Not only does it contain all the factory information, but you can print out pages to have near you when working on your bike. I have the printed factory manual and both an early and late version of Rob's CD; you won't spend a better $10 anywhere.Jerry Fields

OK thanks I will order one. Also I was just out riding and my Brake light and Battery light came on and will not go off. Do you know what might cause this problem. I do think that the front brake is a little low on fluid. Thanks again.

If your XJ is using the original-design battery fluid sensor, pull the battery and check the fluid level. Manual also mentions the sensor (which is plugged into the top of the battery to one side of the fill plugs) needs to be removed and cleaned from time to time to avoid false readings. Should you replace the battery with a non-sensor type there is a work-around to 'fool' the sensor circuit posted in the Tech Tips section.Jerry Fields

Welcome Happy,
Its great to see someone from Kansas city here! Stick with this bunch, they can probably help you check alot of your new ride on your own. Most of the routine maint. you should be able to do.
I will have to agree that most of the bike shops won't touch my XS1100. I guess the old girl is just too much for them.
Anyway, Welcome and good riding.79 XS1100 f (BIGDOG)

I knew there had to be more 1100 riders in KC than just me. Good to here from you. I did find a place that is going to check my bick out. Its McBrann Cycle Shed at 72nd and North Oak. They want $260 to do a full service on it. I got the Brake light to go out but could not get the battery light to go out and now the oil light has came on. Its full of oil. Got to go take my Grandson to school.
