May I also note that riding position greatly impacts the gyroscopic orientation of the bike. I would guarantee many of you ride in an upright position. Whereas I am clamshelled until maintaining a consistent gear and then I am oriented forwards with my feet on the rear pegs giving me a position similar to a sport bike allowing me to drop my knees toward the pavement. (This also preserves my back) As far as cornering and riding ability, you said it....to each his own. (Yeah the comment kinda bothered me haha but it's all good)

The fender metal is not rigid enough to make that much of a difference, if it did then they wouldn't mis-shape and tkat would not have made a brace. Agree or disagree it doesn't matter, but we all know what assuming does.
You like your bike the way it is, that's the main thing.Last edited by James England; 03-15-2014, 02:16 PM.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. Nevertheless, just to update; I went for a nice long ride today. Seems most guys here that have previously tested their top speed say they hit somewhere around 127? Well I decided to open her up and I ended up reaching 130 before slowing down for my turn off, scary thing is she was still pulling. I'm gonna have to take a ride up north where I don't have to worry about tickets to really test her. Sad part is I've been fighting my broken side covers for quite some time now and finally lost one somewhere during my ride. Haha79 XS1100

Hey Murphy,
Don't mind James, he's ENGLISH! And James, you know I'm just ribbing you, too.
With your mods, it's no wonder you're going to be able to attain faster topend speeds. You're now more streamlined with your riding position, and the bike is also lighter. Pushing these behemoths into the wind is the biggest/hardest part of attaining those topend speeds. And you now also have newer carbs that do a better job of atomizing the fuel/air mixture which is important for getting the most power out of these engines. Running Open Headers will promote more airflow, mostly for the upper rpm ranges which seems like where you're running it... or at least for reaching the maximum top end speed. And the modern carbs is probably why it's behaving for you at the lower rpm ranges, so cudos to you for being able to make the bike manageable.

Thanks TC, maybe it's time for a turbo haha no thanks. I already had a blast switching lanes at 130 over a large freeway sectional. Little bumpy but anything to get those hairs to stand up79 XS1100
