  • Fiberglass Side Cover Replacements

    I was thinking the other day about side covers and was wondering if anyone had tried laying up some fiberglass reproductions. I know this site http://replicofairings.com/replico-p...hp?make=YAMAHA sells them but at $90 a piece without shipping that's a bit steep. Has anyone tried making them?

    f you had the original side covers making a negative (or positive) out of casting foam and molding it wouldn't take nothing but a couple days. As far as the mounting tabs go, the one on the right can be replaced with a bit of machined aluminum and so can the one on the right (sold on ebay already).

    I'm going to try and find a broken left hand side cover from somewhere (don't know where) and try to cast a mold for it. Possibly just put some mold release on the inside and pour in two-part epoxy then lay fiberglass over the positive.

      This has been talked about numerous times, with the conclusion that to make/sell them, the finished product would cost more than tracking down a good used original unless the seller is willing to work for near-nothing (not too many volunteers... LOL). Add in the fact that there's three different types (ignoring some detail differences) and that complicates it further.

      Note that those replicas being offered will probably only fit the 78/79 US 'standards', not any of the specials or 80/81 US standards.

        Yes, a regular thread, this one. It would be an enthusiast/volunteer type thing. I reckon one day we might just be 3D 'printing' things like this! Until then, the breaker yards will provide a steady stream of spares....

          I guess the reason I ask is because the ones on ebay are just so expensive and I can't find any 78/79 ones. People are asking $80-$100 for just one of them and with a reusable mold I can't see the fiberglass+resin costing that much more...

          Am I right in thinking the only difference between the 78/79 and the 80/81 covers is the round holes vs slots on the top?

            I'm just waiting for someone to launch into 3D printing for sidecover emblems!

            I dabbled with casting emblems from polyurethane casting resins in silicone molds a few years ago. I did get a few decent ones but really only have a dozen or so 'factory seconds' to show for the effort. 3D printing sounds much more promising.

              Another thought

              I would like to see some aftermarket tanks. I am sure the standard tank would sell sell, depending on the price point. They are getting harder and harder to find...

                      I could see a cheap and easier alternative being vacuum formed acrylic. My battery cover on the auranthetic was done like that. Always wanted to try it. Not sure if the bends are too tight for that though.
