  • Float Bowl Vent Tubes

What is the correct orientation for the rubber tubes that vent the MKII float bowls on my SF?

"Up" would provide shelter under the tank.

"Down" would be sure to drain any water spray.

    I'm thinking "down".

If your using the stock, SF, airbox they plug onto the two nipples at the front side of the airbox.
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Make sure those are drilled; the later bikes had the nipple on the box but weren't drilled as the later carbs vented differently. Parts have been known to be swapped, that's why I mention it.

And they really should go 'up' to prevent any possibility of siphoning.

I'm really glad I asked what seemed to be a trivial question.

My basket-case bike came with pods, and am changing back to the stock air box. The best box I could find is a later model (probably '80), and the hose bosses are not drilled out. In fact, I was cleaning up the box yesterday, and I kept looking at those nubs thinking they look like they have some purpose for mounting.

        Now I know.

        Thanks guys.

Your very welcome, and I'll pass the "Thanxs" onto Steve also for his elaborate elaboration.
