  • JB Weld and exhaust

    As the thread title implies, I am considering using JB weld to patch some holes in my exhaust on the SG. I have not yet found someone to weld up the holes, thought of renting a welder and learning then fixing the exhaust, but with a stock system I would hate to blow the holes out bigger and ruin it.

    Anyway, will JB weld hold up to the temps it would see in the muffler areas of the exhaust?

    I have used it to seal patches held on with pop rivets and it has held up well. Don't think it will stand up to not havering something mechanical to hold it in place.

      It'll work temp. wise, but will soon rattle out even in tiny pinholes.

        I tried using it on an old van muffler. Not only did it not hold but the fumes from it burning off damn near put me in the hospital.

          exhaust repair

          My Kerker 4 into 1 had an exhaust leak at the collector
          that could not be reached with a welder so I mashed some
          MSR Quik aluminum epoxy putty down in there as best as I could and
          after about two hundred miles ..3 or 4 rides, all is well,
          Long term Don't know yet.
          Time will tell,

            Just sealed my straight pipes with JB Weld and then painted them with high temp engine paint. Here's a picture, I'll let you know how it holds up when I installed them tomorrow afternoon:

            78 E - 2to1 exhaust, dynatek coils, special headlight [SOLD!]

                Exhaust Leak

                The JB Weld will not cure this problem. Welding, as suggested, is the best idea. Better off brazing with a flame rather than electric welding. You can grind/sand/polish the brass flat and smooth and then spot paint if necessary.

                  Will MAP gas burn hot enough to braze it? I assume I need to ensure the chrome is gone to brace it.

                    I have a rust through, about the size of a quarter, in the top of my SF's left muffler that I may use one of their products on.

                      The steel is very thin and, unless you have a lot of experience of welding, you'll more than likely blow holes in the muffler the minute a welding rod touches it. Brazing might do it...

                        I do not know the answer to that. I have only used oxy-acetylene.

                          Hi Don,
                          maybe. Are you proposing to use JB-Weld just because you already have some?
                          So go for it, the worst that can happen is that it melts or perhaps just blows out again.
                          But there are tubes of goo specifically meant for patching exhausts, Halfords used to sell Gun Gum, Canadian Tire has an equivalent that I can't remember the name of and I'm sure your local parts store does too.
                          Best try one of them.

                              There are "flame proof" epoxy puttys that you can get a tube of for under $5. I used some to plug some drilled holes in the end of an exhaust and it did not last. It soon broke and fell out.
