  • new guy w/ a question

Hello everyone, My name is Jason I'm a new member and thought I would say hi and ask a quick question. I bought a 81 xs11 special that has been sitting in a guys barn for about a year now. the bike fired right up (after some considerable choking) and the engine sounds great but the tranny is the problem. On the ride home it was slipping out of gear when it got over 5k rpm's and now it is stuck in 3rd gear and wont come out. any suggestions? also does the tranny use seperate oil from the crank case or do they share?

    Welcome to the group.
There is a lot of info on trans. & clutchs in the tech tips. The crankcase shares oil w/ the trans & slutch. There is serperate oil in the middle gear box & final drive. If the bike was sitting for a year or longer, you will need fresh gas. These carbs give fits with old gas and crude from the fuel tanks.

      Hey there Jason,

Also welcome to the "club" of Xsive behavior!!! You say it's stuck in 3rd. Does that mean that you can't even shift up to a higher gear, or just that you can't down shift past 3rd? The shift lever springs can get weak, and so once you downshift a gear, it may not return the shift lever all the way back up to reset the ratchet action for grabbing the next gear! You can gently pull up on the shift lever just enough until it stops but not shifting up, and then try to push down on the lever to see if it will shift down another gear, if so, then just repeat the gentle lift till you get it downshifted to 1st. These trannys are pretty tough aside from the 1st and 2nd gear affliction! Replacement springs were available.

My 81 had 1st fail first, then 2nd a few months later, was able to do the Dremmel fix, going strong 3 years later!!! Good Luck.
