  • new filter and exhaust so i need new jets.

I'm going to be taking the stock exhaust that is on the bike and cutting off the muffler that someone else welded on. After I cut it off I'm going to weld on straight pipes. I am also going with k&n style filters.

So with that long explanation what I'm asking is what should I change my jets to. Thanks in advance.

Try going up on the mains 3 or 4 sizes and then read the plugs.

You may have to baffle the straight pipes to get it to run right through the whole rpm range though.

What bike are you working on ?
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Personally, I'd put the bike on a Dyno and check it that way....

I have a xs1100 79. It is in really rough shape so I decided to make it a bobber. I do know it runs though.

Start off with the stock jetting and check the behavior and the plugs and adjust from there. Dont start changing a bunch of things and once, gradual changes make tuning easier.

Unlike that universal jetting guide, you'll find there is no definitive answer. Do a little searching and see that straight pipes do not perform well with the XS.

They sound awful too, IMO. The main thing to avoid is an excessively (forgive the pun) weak mixture. That can melt holes in pistons if it's really weak.

Being lean from the factory is the reason to go up on the mains right away to avoid something catastrophic from occurring, when mods like these are done.

Not my taste either, but done right with proper baffling, straight pipes and running well are possible, just have to comply with local laws.

And yes, heed to Nates warning about changing too many things at one time.

I have a silly question: Straight pipes w/ baffles? Is that not a contradiction? Or am I a little ignorant as to what straight pipes are?

The real contradiction is "straight pipes on an xs11."

+1..............it'll be anemic no matter what the jetting. Also, 'ventilating' a piston ot two would be in short order. Seen it happen enough times here.

All I have to say about the people that don't like what I'm doing is that I'm asking for help not criticism. The bike is way beyond bringing back to anything close to stock. I'll post some pictures. And keep in mind i got the bike this way without a title.

Advice from knowledgeable people is not meant as criticism (usually). There have been many many people that have come through this forum determined to put straight pipes on. A very select few have ever gotten it to work even moderately well. So, the advice from the knowledgeable people is to pit some form of muffler back on, these engines need back pressure from the muffs to be happy.

But like you implied, you can tell us all to f-off and pound sand....

I'm not telling anyone to f-off. I'm just asking for help. look at the bike. I don't really have the $$ to put on a full new exhaust. I'm trying to work with what I have. So I thought it would be a good idea to just cut off the old ugly Harley muffler that someone else welded on. Now if the straight pipes don't work what could I do to solve my problem. So far most if the replies have been helpful.
