It would seem, according to BA80's recommendation that it needs to be shorted to work...however, I just unplugged mine and the bike runs just fine. Wonder why that is?

    No killswitch, no problems.
I suspect there are two different switches being referred to here. The run /stop / run switch on the right handlebar completes the circuit that lets the engine run. it has to make a connection of the two wires for the bike to run, or the starter to turn.

The tipover switch (also known as the kill switch) shorts the ignition circuit to kill the engine in case of a tip over. This is located under the gas tank. It can be simply unplugged and removed and everything will work, except the engine will not die if the bike is layed down. Which can be dangerous.

+1, found this plug pulled loose on my 79SF a few times, finally tie wrapped it together.

Well, I went through the rest of the electronics behind the fuse box area and found some of the connections a bit nasty...cleaned em up, organized it a bit more.

Unplugged the "flip over" sensor....kill thingy..

And bypassed the kill switch on the handlebar.

Havent had a single electrical issue since

So, now which one was the issue? My suggestion is to clean the handlebar kill switch and get it back on line. It is a safety device.
