  • the start to my first bobber

Got this 1980 xs1100 LH a couple months ago on trade for a saw. Here are the pics of when i first got it over to my buddies garage. Its was sinking into the ground while leaning against a tree. It was abandoned for 17 years before i got it. I've rebuilt the carbs. still have to adjust the floats. carbs 2 and 4 leak when the fuel is on. New filters and fluid and she started (with a little help from a couple sprays of starter fluid). Ill get more pics up as soon as i can get in the garage to work, to cold out lately. I'm mocking up a set of Fat Bob tanks and a solo set. Also have to get the exhaust welded up that i made. after the headers. chopped up a seat of shovelhead slash cut drag pips to make my own using the original headers.

WOW, I like that 3rd pic with all the 'stuff' in all the nooks and crannies of the engine.

I'm sure you've lurked around the site for a while now and have seen the posts from those here that like to keep things stock. Don't let them discourage you. I like to keep things mostly stock, but can understand the lure/excitement of a bobber/modified bike. (see Nightengale's thread: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35258 )
This site is great for understanding how these machines were supposed to run. Some have modified their bikes with newer systems (like flashers and coils and HID lights, etc) Anyway, if you're not sure, ask first before you break something (like bending a valve, etc)

A word of advice, try to sell/give off as many parts as you can to finance your job and make sure you're certain that this is what you really want to do before you do anything that can't be 'undone' (like cutting the frame). Once that's done, there's no going back. (and trying to get rid of it then becomes a whole lot harder)

There are some here that would love some of those parts (like the exhaust).

Welcome to the crazy world of XS11 and good luck!
    Keep the pics/updates coming.

That's an LH. I hate to see a Midnight Special go under the knife.

Actually, it is an LG, but either way a MNS. . Really, it is so abused and neglected that all the MNS stuff would be pitted and flaking anyway, so make it what you want. I do hope the frame is nit chopped up though.

The side covers on the engine look like an LH.

The signature says 80 LH. That doesn't make sense either.

The LG had decals for the 'recess' on the covers, but there wasn't an actual recess.

I was told it was an LH but it could be an LG. im used to XJ bikes. the only cut on the frame is where the bushing goes in the back for the fender. someone had cut it up and put it back together so i cut it off the right way. i have lights im going to mount in the frame for signals. ive looked around the site a little already reading about maintenance and other mods and etc... the exhaust was destroyed. full of dirt and water (clogged). i had the headers patched so i could build the rest of the exhaust. The switches and the original buck horn bars were destroyed so i have all new stuff from the upper triple tree up. I dont have a switch assembly on the right hand anymore and i had to put a new ignition switch in it. im building my own side covers. The ignition switch and run/stop switch is in the right side cover location. and the start button it on the left. the start and run switch are black Angel eye switches with green LED rings. i have to take measurement for the new throttle cable. I have a viewable Quick action throttle assembly. Brembo master cylinder. and a new switch set for the left. All my wiring is done except for the signals. Plug and play is how i have it wired. The main harness was chewed so i repaired it. It runs well. i haven't took it for a ride for obvious reasons. I have the parts on a shelf that are usable that i plan to sell. I have to weld some tabs on for my Tanks. and a couple of little things. then im sending it to a buddy to tune it up and do the valves and etc... I plan on taking this bike to charity runs and other events. itll be painted with chalk board paint. i'll let the little kids that are there draw on it for fun. i only have $350 in it so far and it runs after the work i've done. not bad for my first project. and it sat for 17 years. poor thing.

No sacred cows......bobber it! I'd say the bike is too far gone for 'former glory' restoration. It would cost three times what an example in good condition could be bought for. I've broken for spares a bike that was in better condition. One has to be realistic about restorations and spending a fortune on a bike that has been abused and neglected like that is pointless, IMO. Hell, even getting it running, in any state or form, bobber, chopper or whatever, will be an improvement on what it is now.

I suppose the only reservation is that weird 'title' problem you get over there a lot. Cutting a restorable frame which has a 'title' when perhaps someone out there has a great example of this machine but can't get a title, might be a bit of a shame...if your frame and title could solve their problem......
