  • XS11 Ignition Coil Swap List

Okay, so Don posted a mod from the UK site regarding the Honda VF coils being a direct fit. Don also mentioned that they were close to stock coils as far as secondary impedance being somewhere around 15k ohms. I know there are lists out there for modern R/R's, lists for ACCT's, but has anybody made a list for Ignition coils? I guess I am looking for modern coils from newer bikes that would be close to a direct fit for our bikes. 1.5 ohm, or 3 ohm dual-output coils. I'm not going to buy Dynatek's, so if Honda VF coils are my only option, then so be it.

You could buy Accel's, they cost even more than Dynatek's.

Haha Phil. At a little over a $130, I guess they would not be the worst buy. But, I was wondering if there was anything off a modern 4cyl. bike that would work.

As I stated, I just pulled the info posted on the UK site to know those would work. So I do not know any other alternatives.

Keep in mind also if cost is your driving factor, that coils from a newer bike will carry a newer bike price tag with them.

          Hey Ian,

Another problem is that NEWER ignition systems use CDI type ignitions and their coils are 0.7 ohms. And I recall Crazy Steve telling about other modern coils...can't recall if they were automotive ones, but they needed a special ignition system that controlled how long the power was supplied to the coils, Dwell control IIRC, and without that they would burn up with older standard type ignition systems.

SO....finding a list of "MODERN" coils may not be possible due to the mismatch with our ignition system. I just checked, and found that the Honda VF1000r was made from 1984 to 1988, not really MODERN, and so that's partly why they can match our ignition system. But as stated, they are also close to OEM in 2ndary impedence, and so they are probably close to the same power output ~15 kv.

DynaTek provides very high output type coils that properly match our ignition system and provide twice the spark energy of OEM coils. Many folks have reported the multiple benefits of stronger coils/spark, easier quicker starting, smoother engine performance at idle and low throtttle response. I would suspect less likely to foul. We have reported that we don't ncessarily get any better fuel economy, but the seat of the pants feels like they have more power overall.

Yeah, I spent my whole lunch researching coils from many bikes. The few I've found from older Kaw ZX bikes, Yamaha FZ1's, and a few others will work. In the end, I may go with the VF or Dynatek coils. I was able to find time today to.break my bike down for the Winter. Out of curiosity I checked my secondary side of the coips and saw 25k ohms oout of each coil.

Yep, dwell control and the ones I looked at were for bikes and had the 'correct' 3 ohm primary. So without knowing what kind of ignition system the donor bike has, it could be a crapshoot.

I'm with Rasputin, buying a used coil not much newer and with dubious history just doesn't seem like a money-smart thing to do...

If you left the plug caps on the wires then 25k is what you should see. 15k for the coil and then 5k for each plug cap.

I may come tax return time. I was just curious as to my options. I may buy a newer R/R as well.

I've been running Honda Fireblade (93-96) coils on all my bikes for many years now without problems. They also cost absolutely nothing when secondhand. Just drop the resistor under the fuel tank. Don't know about other years, 93-96 was what I had lying around. Only downside is that the second mounting hole does not line up, I solved that with a tywrap. I' m sure there are some more professional ways to do that
