Vaild Coil Test?

Just what the doctor ordered.

I found my coil test is not a valid test. I am not competely sure, but I suspect there should be a condensor or something in the primary ciruit to prevent the secondary energy from draining back into the source as the current is broken. Or something.....

So, I put all the parts on the bike and found my ign coils are good, except I need to clean the resistors in the plug caps.

Real problem seems to be an intermittant pick-up coil.

Strange thing.....one pick-up is always good @ 720 Ohms. Other pick-up works for awhile while it measures 25 kOhms (Strange). Then the spark completely stops working and the 'bad' pick-up goes to infintite resistance (open circuit). I am surprised everthing works while the 'bad' coil measures 25kOhms.

Anyway, I seem to be a path to eventual Nirvana.

So if I replace the resitor with say a pice of brass the correct size will that remove the resistance? I'm running the iridum NGKs and they are resistor plugs. They perform really well but I was worried about the cap + the plugs resistance.

Yes, people have done that, it will work just fine. I haven't done it but I run both non resistor caps and plugs.

The Honda VF coils ARE a good option in spite of some of the nay-sayers who actually don't know the durability of Honda coils. Over 45yrs. associated on two wheels, rarely if ever have I seen Honda coils short to ground internally.

The Honda VF500 coils that replaced my tired 3ohm stock coils(2.3/2.4ohms respectively) last month definitely showed my low rpm carb issues were electrical. Both 3ohm VF coils checked out at 3 and 3.1ohms and plugs no longer black from idle to 4K.

Just wanted to say that I am not a nay sayer where the honda coils are concerned. I do however have issue with the ones who sell them. One never knows the rep, nor the condition that the coils are in if they are used and specially from ebay. They could be from a fire burnt or flooded bike for all one knows. That is the only reason I suggest new over used.
The Honda VF1000r was made from 1984 to 1988. Hardly much newer than our bikes. The bikes of that period had much the same make up so why would 30 yr old spark plug wires be better than our XS's of roughly the same age?
In my opinion, to improve on stock, one must make a step to do just that. Improving on stock, may mean newer, better, faster, or just an oldie goldie that does the job better.
To each his own on this issue, but I will buy new to ease my own mind on what I am running and how long it may last me.

Forgot to add that in my case for the VF500 coils, I bought them locally and had my meter with me to check them out first.
Secondly, the Honda coils have ALWAYS been spec'ed differently by Honda for Nippendiso to produce.
Thirdly, in 45plus yrs. associated with things on two wheels, never seen any older Honda coil fail. That is also the general consenses of factory trained techs. I'm still associated with in the bike world.
The Honda VF series just happen to be a plug'n'play option that IS an oldie goldie that does the job not necessarily better(same output as OEM Yammies ), but durable enough to continue to put out the same voltages decades later.

I do agree though, any electrical component, specially used is a crap shoot if your not able to check it out in person.

By the same token, look at the results of the black coils and green coils that many have found to end up being crap coils.....and they were new.
