  • timing and plug gap for 82 XJ1100

Anyone able to advise on how to check the timing? Also spark plug gap req'd for an 82' XJ1100? I don't have a manual yet - though I need one soon.

    Thanks,

    Recommended spark plugs are NGK BP6ES. Gap them to 0.7 - 0.8 mm (0.028 - 0.032 inches)

Timing on an XJ is not adjustable. You can check the timing with a timing light. At idle - 1,100 rpm - the pointer (under the left-hand cover) should be between the [ ] brackets stamped into the timing plate. (Timing light attached to #1 plug.) Plugs/cylinders are numbered left to right, so #1 is closest to the shifting lever.

The XJ does not have a mechanical advance; ignition curve is programmed into the 'black box" TCI module. '81 models have a similar system, '78 - '80 XS models have the mechanical vacuum advance.

You should check the cam chain tension, though. Search on cam chain or just ask how to do this...process is straight-forward and should be done every oil change or so.
