  • Will XS750 tank fit XS1100 ?

I prefer the shape of the standard tanks over the shape of the specials. But I'm having difficulty finding a standard tank for an XS1100. Seems to be more tanks for XS750's on Ebay so I was wondering if anyone knows if they are interchangeable.

    Nope, not even close.....

The only thing that fits without hacking on the bike is the XS11 tanks, and they are getting increasingly hard to find. The XJ tanks will fit if you modify the rear frame mount and the seat, but it's like the special tank but more so....

      Hi Scratcher,
like Rick sez, they don't fit.
What you can do is cut the tunnel out of an XS11 Special tank, cut the shell off the XS750 tank and weld the two together.
This'd get the shape you want but the XS11's tank tunnel width would significantly reduce the hybrid tank's capacity and that's not a good thing on an XS11.
Or if you want to pay more than the bike is worth and stand in line for a year or so there's an outfit in Scotland that'll build you a custom stainless steel tank of whatever shape and size you need.

I thought about trying to weld the xs11 tunnel onto another tank but I don't know if my welding is up to par for that. I should try experimenting with an extra tank I'm not using just to see if I can get it to be free of leaks. If my welding is good enough then maybe I'll just make some knee cut-outs on the original tank.

I suggest just running the Special tank for now. Be patient and a standard tank will pop up, I just sold one about 6 weeks ago. Don't be hacking things up. That's why some parts for these bikes are getting scarce.

            Tank

My special tank is too small, but the standard tank does not look as good. I have decided to carry two half gallon jugs of fuel for longer trips. Might go a bit bigger than a half G.
Will also try and get 40MPG ( big gallon ) as well. Instead of the 35 currently.
But then, if I found a decent standard tank??

Yeah, the special tank is small but on longer trips it feels good to get off the seat every hour or so. I usually figure stopping for gas every 80 miles or so just to be safe but I have gone as long as 115-120 in a pinch.

If I keep the bike down to 65 MPH or less I have gotten as good as 42-45 MPG. US gallons. But I usually run 75-85 MPH so 32-35MPG is about normal.

I might feel bad about hacking up the original tank if it were in decent shape. It has a golfball size indent so it's not worth much as it is.

I've fixed bigger dents than that, in the tank on my SG now as a matter of fact.

                      Hi Greg,
FWIW, my XS11 Special sidecar rig has a Standard gas tank and also carries a 2-1/2 gallon jerrycan and I don't like to ride further than 100km (63miles) without stopping to rest my elderly backside.
The advantage of carrying more gas isn't about how far one can ride without stopping.
It's about planning a ride around where are the next interesting places to visit rather than where is the nearest effin' gas pump?

Ha ha ha Fred, if I was going to be riding in the wilderness tundra I might be thinking of that. As it is, I've only run out of gas once on the highway and that's because I neglected to consider the wind I was fighting. Even then I was only about 2 or 3 miles from a gas station and a cell phone call away from help.

I do see your point though.

                          Fuel range

Most of you guys will not remember when the gas stations closed around 6 to 8 pm, or closed on weekends. And many were more than the range of Yami. As in a lot further than 120 miles.
I agree is is nice to stop now and then, but I do remember a 4 1/2 gallon tank and darn near 70 mpg.
When I used to travel from Penticton BC to the track in Seattle, in the truck with bikes in the back, I had to carry a lot of spare gas. Would always run out at the top of Stevens Pass in WA. Nothing open in the US north central WA. Or the Okanogan Valley for the folks that know the area.
Sometimes I would be inland for the weekend and ride to work in Vancouver early on Monday morning. About 225 miles non stop, no traffic over the Cascade Mountains. Be there in 3 1/4 hours. Had to slow down for traffic entering Vancouver.
