Hi guys I am a new member have a 1980 xs1100 noticed at low rev and idle my rev counter does not work and the bike seems like it is misfiring. can it be my timing or is there a gremlin in the wiring?

The Tach runs off pulses from the generator so I would first start off looking at and cleaning all the plugs everywhere in the wiring harness and making sure that the wiring is up to snuff.
That very likely would clear up most issues. Another thing to look at is the wires that run down to the pickup coils. With all the flexing that they do the wires get weak and break inside the insulation. Since the advance plate that they are hooked up to moves you will often see and intermittent loss of cylinders. Check the wires and replace the wires if necessary.Nathan

So lets start with what idle speed are you running at? When was the last time your carbs were cleaned?
I also agree to clean all the wiring , especially the three white wire connector behind the fuse block.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I would buy a can of De-Oxit and do every single connector in the whole bike. I did that on mine and one can will do it if you don't go mad with it. I'd do all the block connectors in the headlamp, the ones behind the fuse board, everything. Disconnect each block and spray both sides twice, as per instructions on the can. The terminals will come up like new...XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Hi AMG,
Along with what has already been suggested, check your battery for a full charge as the TCI needs more than 10.5 volts to fire the coils.
Also disconnect all your grounds, clean them and reinstall.

Timing Advance
The timing advance mechanism on my 1980 was causing low idle running problems. I removed the unit, cleaned, repaired the wiring to the coils and replaced the vacuum hose to the carb. Was running great and then the rear wheel bearings failed. I will be working on that next.80 XS11 1196 Wiseco kit, balanced crank,

There's a good 'how to' thread on changing the bearings. Or PM me and I can send you instructions......XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). You can make your bike perform better by improving the grounds. Change all chassis grounds into direct battery grounds.

AMG. Look behind the fuse box for a large white connector with 3 white wires and one green, or yellow wire (can't quite remember which colour it is). I think you'll find it corroded, and looking like its melted. Clean it up, replace it if you can, and most of your problem should go away.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)
