Hello, I was working on a 79 special for a friend, cleaned the carbs, now around 5000, it cuts out , it only has a wire mesh filter in now, the old filter was filthy, when I take the filter out and leave the bottom off, it does not miss or cut out, have new filter ordered, but just wondering if any one else has had this problem, thanks in advance. Have this problem on the special and one of my standards, no filter both bikes run great, with filter, both cut out around 5000 rpms, I can't figure it out. TIA, Later 'Dog

I guess some fuel filters restrict flow enough to cause problems. Might try a different type of filter. Ive never run into this, but thats what Ive heard. ??? Good luck, Chad.

Might be running a tad rich, taking the filter out will let it have a little more air. Try lowering the floats. If it runs better cold than warm that will tell you it is rich.

What kind of Filters are you running? Had the same problem on my xs 650. Saw a post on the 650 list talking about EMGO pod filters causing this problem so I puller mine off ans went for a short ride and sure enough it pulled right up to redline. I ordered to stock filtrers and reinstalled the factory airbox now it's fine only problem is now I can make the clutch slipp in 4th or 5th if I just crank on it without shifting. They theory is that with these filters theyt some how disturb the air flow into the carbs causinf some sort of turbulence of the air going in which causes the problem. Some guys have made them work buy puttin in extensions to move them farther away from the carbs, they use rubber pipe conectors that they get at hardware stores Home Depot etc. I didn't want to mess with it and had the stock air box so I just took it back to they way it came. I unders tand why the do it the emgo pods can be had for $10 plus a couple of bucks for a pipe adapter and some hose clamps vs about $50 bucks for a real K&N. Not sure if thats it but it seems like it could be.
