  • Where to find all XS Models?

    Hello,

I am new to this site and after buying a 1980 XS Eleven Special, I am curious as to all the letter designations and what models they represent.

Hope to be on this site for a long time.

        Hi Jim and welcome,
OK, the bike's papers say it's an SG but what is it really and did the POs mess with it?
Be aware that Yamaha parts swap like LEGO so that your particular bike may have been made into something quite different.
        Check for these S-distinctive features;-
Front-slung front axle, round gauges, round headlight, swivelling front brake calipers, small gas tank, & 16" rear wheel.
And the SG-distinctive slotted brake disks & cast grabrail.
Post photos via photobucket or other photo-hosting site as direct photos don't work.

This is definitely an original XS 1100 Special. Two previous owners and they live on the same block in MI. 25,xxx original miles and has all the S features. Runs very nice with no problems other than the turn signals stay on and do not blink. Probably a flasher issue. I am going to go through everything and change all fluids (brake, differential and oil). A little polishing and some aluminum buffing and that is all I intend to do to it.

It looks good in the garage next to my 02 RSMV, although somewhat small in comparison.

Thanks to all that supplied the XL model lists. I really appreciate it. Now if anyone wants to know about the 99-2013 Royal Stars, I believe that I can offer information.

                Hi Jim,
the lack of flash may be as simple as dirty contacts or the original flasher bulbs being replaced with automotive bulbs which typically are only 22 Watts rather than the 27 Watts the flasher needs to work.
                Hows the 4-ways?
BTW, any 2-prong auto flasher will work no matter what the load but ONLY the stock flasher will work with the self-canceler.

Check all the ground wires for the flashers BEFORE spending any money. Age makes the grounds collect rust, and not work well. If they flash at higher RPMs, that is a sure sign of ground problems. Easy fix is use ant-seize on ALL ground points/bolts after cleaning well. This may clear up the problem, as most of the original flashers are STILL working..

change all fluids is good idea. Remember gear oil in middle drive as well as final drive.

Also a good idea to regrease the wheel bearings, swing arm bearings, steering head bearings and while you have the rear wheel off clean and regrease the final drive splines...but wait...not done yet... take the 4 nuts off the final drive that connects it to the SA and pull the FD off and clean and repack the driveshaft also, as the grease zerk is just for show and does'nt really get the lube where it needs to be.
