  • Headlight Wiring Question

    I need some help with wiring my headlight correctly on my '79 XS11SF. I picked up an aftermarket headlight when I pulled off my faring and installed it about 6 months ago. I wired it into what I assume was not the correct wire on a big bundle that came out of the faring. About a month ago the first headlight fried (the 3-prong connector melted). I replaced the headlight with the another of the same design. Now, a week ago it quit working as well. What are the correct colored wires i need to connect for my headlight?

    If your headlight was working, what leads you to believe you had the 'wrong colors' ? The only thing that could cause the connector to melt is drawing too much current. Two reasons for that, 1. loose connector, 2. Higher wattage bulb than stock.

    Your colors are Yellow (High Beam), Green (Low Beam), Black (Ground). I'll bet, at a minimum, your ground is loose.

      I've been running it on high beam the entire time because I was unsure how to wire it up properly. That may have caused the 3-prong connector to melt?

        Nope, no reason you should not be able to run on high beam all the time. Something is loose or shorting somewhere to melt the connector.

          It's not got both high and low beam illuminated at the same time, has it?
          XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.

            You know, I may have both connected and running at the same time. I'll look at that. Probably would explain why it only lasts for a few months at a time, right?

              Yep, that will kill the lamps fairly quickly... and the extra heat will melt the socket...
