The special calipers are a swivel type mount whereas the standards have a slide type mount. The specials have an angled lining and a right and left set of pads for the front that look like they are abnormally worn when they are new. Therefore Fred's "Weird Harold " designation.
I have never had an issue with the special calipers as long as they have been properly serviced and are in good working order. I've found that the sintered type pads give the best stopping power with them.
