  • what year was oil coolers installed on the 1100?

Just as the title says. I read an article on bikez.com or whatever and it kept mentioning the oil cooler. I was no aware of earlier models having it.

I think the 850's came with them too, but I'd have to verify with the fiche to be sure.

Yes, the 850's did. But, the article made it sound like they were riding a '78.

They came out on the very first model in 78 right through till the last ones, anywhere but in the US.

            Euro Bike ?

Ian, is it possible that they were testing a Euro XS1100/ XS1.1 as they came with oil coolers from the factory in years other than 1981.

DCII- Yes, good catch. I did not even notice the top pic being a Euro "E", let alone the website probably being non-US.

Definitely. All XS1100 European bikes had the oil cooler as standard. It seems ironic, given that the UK can be cold a lot and rarely has a summer like say, in Texas...where the XS didn't have an oil cooler as standard. I've never been able to figure it out, actually. Anyone have any ideas? Oil cooler in temperate, often cold countries, no oil cooler in USA where it can be rather hot?

My only thought would be that there is perhaps less traffic congestion on the whole in the USA? Never been across the big pond, so I am guessing only.

Simple. Us spec bikes didn't come fitted with them due to the blanket 55mph speed limits in force at the time.
Anywhere else, you could let them rip, comparatively.

You sure that's the reason? Our speed limit was, and still is, only 60mph out of town roads, mostly and only 70 on our motorways/freeways.m

I imagine there are any number of reasons why they did not put an oil cooler on the XS11 until 1981 and even then only on the H model in the North American market My first thought was that it was excluded due to cost and the price point they needed to be at in order to be competitive versus Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. They may even have taken into consideration the number of owners who would install custom exhaust systems which would have caused routing problems with the oil hoses. Or maybe their engineers felt the benefits of the coolers was negligible for most owners? I doubt that this question will ever be answered with any certainty and your guess is as good as mine as to why they were not oe.

I think you need to look at the UK bikes as being Euro bikes and they all had oil coolers, the Germans loved the XS11 and they had and still have unlimited stretches of Autobahn where you could sit at 120mph.

Only problem now, you have to get outta the way of the big BMW/Audi/Merc drivers howling up behind you

And at the other end of the globe, some preproduction XS11's were tested in outback Queensland, and the neighboring state (Territory) until just recently had no speed limits on the highways, so I'd say they allowed for this as well.
