Stuck idle screw

Hi Guys !
Any tips on getting a stuck idle mixture screw loose (carbs still on bike) ?
Of course it's the one under the octi but I jacked the tank up and moved the octi out of the way. Have a homemade screw driver to fit the slot and can get enough pressure that if I use any more muscle I'm afraid of ruining the slot.

I agree but the bike runs near ( as my perfect means ). I wanted to get er done. It's cold here 20°F, warm up to 40-50 for a day or 2 coming. All my solvents are not working for 3 days now.

Why are you messing with it if your are satisfied with the way its running? I agree with James, take them off and get them on a bench. Might save you time down the road.

you might find a piece of rod about the same diameter as the pilot screw hole and put it in and tap lightly on the screw. You can not hit it hard or you will damage the head. Its basically the same effect an impact screwdriver used to break a stuck screw. I really do suggest that you take the carbs off to try fix it. It does not take as long to take them off where you can get to it easy as it does to fix what you may mess up doing it on the bike.

Was almost perfect, I want it as close to my perfect as I can get it.
As it happened, I had a number of screwdrivers I made for on road adjustment and carb clean. Went through my bunch and found 1 that fit real tight in one of my collected idle mix screws ( funny only one screw had a nice slot in it, some were even off center ). With this added tight fit confidence I gave it another try, would not loosen but then it turned ever so slightly inwards, worked it to get the penetrating oil in the threads and I got it. All are now set at 3 turns out and ready to start but did not want to try in 20° temps.

Good to hear you got it out. Without removing the carbs gives you a built-in vise.
Some time ago, I had to re-slot #4 idle mix screw with a tiny plunge bit and my dremal tool. Then I removed the carb bank, blew all excess brass filings out of recess and removed screw, squared top back off and finessed the slot perfectly with the dremal. That one ended up a bit more recessed, but all good.

unstuck mix screw

I've cut the towers, also opened them slightly with a chisel and used the dremel to just slice through the tower into the screw to make a slot for the screwdriver. What works ? Sometimes just discussing the situ gives one the heart to give it another go/rethink/inspiration.

For one, I would have removed the carbs and done a very careful job of whatever attempt I was trying. trying to do it on the bike when the carbs can be off in less than 5 minutes is simply beyond me. The possibilities for problems are endless and every precaution should be taken to make sure you do not screw up. Trying to do it on the bike is just "So Wrong" to me.
Have you looked up the 5 minute carb removal and install threads?
