My 1980 XS 1100 ran great all summer and on my last ride it started to have a faint high pitched buzzing from the engine it got louder as the rpms increased but was still the same noise just a little louder. It seemed to come from the front and top center of the engine. I thought it might be valves so I pulled the cover and checked all the valves, they were all too tight (very little clearance) I changed all the shims and got everything set to the specs in my "Clymer" book. When I started it up it had a real bad low pitched buzz almost like a very rapid rattle it gets less with rmp increase but is quite loud and sounds like it comes from the top end. What do I look for or should I recheck and redo all the shims. I can't put a ton of money in as I don't have it. Also will an engine from a 1982 XS1100 fit and function? I know where there is one fairly reasonable if this one is shot.

Check the exhaust for leaks and tightness as well as have a quick look at your engine mounts. Exhaust have been known to be loose and the inner part of the double wall could be separating. Engine mounts wear out and sometimes will crack so that is another possibility.
Engine related noises can be troublesome to find as so many parts of it can transmit and seem to come from somewhere else.2-79 XS1100 SF

+1 on what Rasputin said, could be a leaky head gasket or exhaust gasket too.Greg

Cam chain stretched to it's limit? If you keep the adjuster locked with the set screw, but unscrew the adjuster from the case, then loosen the set screw, does it pop out further? (Assuming you still have the original tensioner)
And you did get that little bridge put back in between the cams, right?Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!
