  • Engine work

Later this week Im going to start taking my E apart. The entire project will be a full dismantling of every single piece. Along with all the rebuilding of everything and all the powdercoating, I will be taking the engine apart to replace all the gaskets and seals.

Is there anything else in the motor that I should be replacing while Im there? Was thinking I should have the cylinders honed and do rings at the time? It doesnt burn any oil but I really dont want to have to do this again in a few years.

If I had an engine that worked Ok and didn't burn oil I'd leave it well alone.

If you want one to rebuild buy a fixer upper engine, that way if you're going inside its for good reason

I would agree but I figured if it was going to be out of the bike already I may as well do everything I can. Im also going to do the Dremel fix on the tranny. It doesnt have any shifting problems yet but figured since Im there...

        Face/palm....

I'll throw in another 2 cents. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Grinding perfectly good gears that don't need it is insane. Move the washer on 2nd gear and you'll be golden. Honing cylinders is done just to make rings seat. If you're pulling the cylinders off, then yes, you'll need a hone, but if you can paint what you need with the cylinders/pistons intact, don't pull them off.

If you're splitting the cases, I'd freshen up the starter clutch and check for any copper color on your crank bearings. If there is only a touch and it's still mostly silver looking, leave them alone as well. Maybe a new cam chain if yours is anywhere near limits. Maybe freshen up your clutch springs.

OK.. maybe that's like 8 cents.

Can the engines be powdercoated with everything in them? Wasnt sure how the gaskets and anything rubber inside would handle it.

Never done Powder coat so I do not know the baking temp. Is it really that much hotter than the engine cases during operation on a good 90 degree day?

As to the gears, if you have no sign of any slippage, then I would agree not to fix what is not broken. I would move the washer like Tod suggested and then look at the gears to see how rounded they look.

Oshkosh Wisconsin, I flew into there once about twenty years ago. Now that was the airport, haircare, tire salon kind of airport. Two gates, the door on the left or the door on the right. Both just emptied onto the tarmac for you to walk over to the plane.

                        OSHKOSH AIRPORT

All I know is, it was by far the smallest airport I have been to.

Yeah, Wisconsin is definitely an interesting state. Down the road from my work is a small subdivision/airpark called Prince Field, where the house's attached garages are actually the plane hangars. I know airports are designated by class, and I believe it to be a "G", where-as Oshkosh one is probs a "D". There are many within the area of here that are smaller aurports including Oakland, Bishop, Reagan, Willow Run, etc.

                              Nate,

On other thought. In my experience, powder coating is a bit thicker than high temp paint and can make an engine run a little hot. Fried an old Sportster once and think the powder coating contributed to my problems.
