  • Anybody actually try modding special pipes to a standard?

I'm curious if this has been done. I understand the designs, etc., but wondering if anybody has tried. Obviously a lot more special exhausts out there over standards.

If you used the foot peg mounts from a special it should go right on. The special pipes angle up a little.

The foot peg mounts from a Special are different from a Standard and won't interchange.

The 81 Standard (Venturer) used a special exhaust system. Never looked close enough at one to see what the difference is in the mounting. The only difference would be in the muffler brackets. I can't see where fabing something would be too difficult.

Top one is a left side SF, bottom one is an F. Never tried putting the Special on the Standard but the other way around it won't even come close. That part of the frame is way different.

Rooster and I tried it ...putting a special on a standard... and same result. Not even in the ballpark.

Specials and Venturers interchange both exhaust and aluminium gusset/peg mount........same, same.

                  Hi Nate,
Peg mount is different on the Venturer from those shown,.
Either find a pair of the 81 peg mounts which have 3 mounting holes or fabricate something.

                    Hi Ian,
This parts bike has the mounting bracket and exhaust looks ok on the right hand side anyway.

Oh, thanks Phil! Actually, I just bought a complete OEM standard exhaust system in great condition for my bike a few weeks ago. I did not even have to tune the carbs after switching from my Mac's.

The venturer frame is similar if not the same as the Special frame. A one off, and different than the E,F and G frames. That is why the Special foot peg brackets, and exhaust fit it, but not any of the other Standards. The H is a non-standard Standard.

AS has been stated, the Standard exhaust can be mounted to a Special with a bracket to extend the mount point lower, I have one on my SH. However, the Special exhaust n a Standard would need to be above the foot peg bracket and interfere with the bracket and or the pegs themselves.

One of the UK lads has fitted Special exhausts on a Standard, as you all say the Special exhaust is swept up more than Standard and that caused a problem fouling with the Standard rear footrests on his bike, use of Special rear footrests which are a little higher cured the problem.

If I remember correctly both types have different rear brake pedal mounting that will need swapping as well.

Not if you use the Standard footrest aluminium bracket Math.

Yep the Standard ali bracket has the pivot for the rear brake shaft whereas the Specials is in the frame, Pete used the Standard ali bracket with the Special exhausts on his Standard.
