  • rear shock question

The springs on my rear stock shocks are rusty. (81H)

Is there a way to disassemble them enough to get the spring off so i can dunk it in some evaporust?

Yes, compress the spring ( I used a small ratchet strap) and the slotted washer on top can be removed.
I put the lower shock mounting eye in a vise to do this.

I then just simply steel wooled the spring til all the rust was removed and reinstalled.

I use a Progressive Suspension shock tool. It works on the stock shocks.

You can do the job with a floor jack and a length of chain, but there is the potential for serious injury. Set the shock on the pad. Run the chain under the jack. Hook onto the spring on either side. Raise the jack until the lock is free.

What is this 'slotted washer' you speak of?

I'm trying to visulaize this and I can't.

So I've been searching the web and saw some pics and it looks like the aforementioned washer is up top. So the idea is to compress the spring enough to drop the top cup and washer enough to let the washer get around the shaft of the the shock. Right?
Then the top cup slides off and the spring too?

Okay so now, I've got to figure out a safe way to compress the spring.

Correct, I compress the spring by putting the bottom mounting eye in a vise with the shock upright vertical using thick rubber pads to protect the shock, first. Then I use a small ( 1" ) ratchet strap wrapped under the vise and hooked to the upper most coils of the spring, tighten strap to compress spring and retainer is easily removed. GL

I made a tool from some wood and ready rod. I also made one of steel but the wood one works better as it does not mar any finish. Simple to make and easy to use. Just be sure to use plywood or a hard wood so it can take the pressure. Here are some pics of my wooden one.

The one hole is smaller than the other and they are just big enough for the eye of the shock to go thru bit still hit on the shock body and the top of the spring. Once it is compressed you pull the retainer out and carefully loosen the nuts on the ready rod until it has no pressure on it.
