  • Heat grips

I broke down and bought a set of KOSO heat grips model AM10703E, because they were the only ones available off the shelf right away. Seems decent enough @$60.00. I could not find any reviews about it anywhere. Anyone?
Any way i am installing it but can not make up my mind as to where to power it from safely. I want it on a circuit that powers off when the ignition is off.
    Any ideas anyone?

I would say wire them right from the battery but have a switched relay to power them.

I would like to minimize the amount of wires I run, splicing into one of the light circuits a bad idea?

You already have a fused aux. under right side cover! Wire them to that thru the Lo/Off/Hi switch that comes with the heated grips.

Yes, but then again any passerby can just touch the push button and turn it on.
That aux. is always powered with key on or off.

This is true, however most folk wouldn't do that, but from experience quite a lot of folk will twiddle with switches through curiousity rather than malice.

And as said, you can forget to turn the grips off yourself flattening your battery, well I would for that reason I wired my grips to the main switched live from the ignition switch inside the headlight, the brown wire, BUT fitting an extra inline fuse for protection.

Yes but if you wire it up smartly the relay switch will be a keyed power so they can flip that switch to their hearts content and nothing will happen, as long as you didn't leave the key in it.

I still say the best bet is right from the battery with a 12 gauge wire and nothing else in the line. That way there is nothing that can over tax the circuit and start melting wires.

Since it looks like the set you got have a temp control you could do it 2 different ways.

First way would be to have a main power switch for them that controls a relay. The switch would control a keyed power wire. You flip the switch and it triggers the relay and the grips are now powered and can be used.

Other way would be to eliminate the keyed switch and just have the keyed power wire just go directly to the relay and to have the relay active all the time so the grips are ready to be used all the time.

I am attempting to post a crude wiring diagram to go along with this but photobucket is not cooperating right now.

A quick down and dirty phone made wiring diagram. Just remove the switch if you want it always on with the key.

Is it a single pole double throw relay switch i'm looking for?
I don't know a thing about relays, I am googling it for info.
