  • When to buff new clearcoat?

The tank on the XJ11 had too much sun bleaching and I stripped it, primered it & painted it with rattle can lacquer and put a 2 part epoxy clear-coat on. I have almost two cans of Spraymax 2K on it applied over 24 hours. Its been about 24 hours since the last layer and its been dry to the touch for 20 hours. There's some orange peel that I can remove with some 1000 wet/dry and then use some Mothers buffing & then polishing compound.

What I don't know is how long to wait before I should sand out the orange peel and then use the Mothers on it to get the shine back?

    Suggestions?

This is where I get all my body work and paint info from:

    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Honestly, I'd wait for that clear to set a couple of days for sure. Most sites recommend a week curing time. Then, go ahead and work your way up on the wet/dry paper till it's smooth as butter. I've had some sites recommend a rubbing compound prior to waxing, but I skipped out on that. Go with a Meguiar's or Ice. Great products in my opinion.

+1 Seven days to cure before touching with paper. Then buffing compound before wax.

Well, it won't kill me to not use the bike for another week but at this time of the year each day on it is more precious. If waiting a week will make a better result though, that's what I should do. The hard part is waiting longer than I need to to have at the clear coat to make it glass.

          Thanks for the advice!

If there is anything this forum has taught me, it's patience. Waiting on that curing time is essential for a lasting paint job. I've done a few bikes now, and learn something new each time. First time was using a "gas resistant" clear. Needless to say, it wasn't. I will utilize January for any repainting, master cylinder rebuilds, etc.

LOL Phil, I can't eat a hamburger while wearing a new shirt without getting something on it that leaves a stain. If I put that tank on the bike before that clear coat is hard I'm sure as anything going to bump it & dent the finish. I'll be better off to let it sit till it's cured & if that's a week, I'll do that.
