my xj's po in their infinate wisdom removed the side stand switch and had the neutral switch grounded on the frame. so matter what my bike thinks it is in neutral all the time, with the stand up. i picked up a new screw and reconnected the neutral sensor. having been inside the transmission case i've seen how it work using the small bearing on the shift drum to complete the circuit. the bike starts fine but when it is shifted into gear and the nuetral light goes out the bike dies. i assume their is another safety switch open somewhere. my initial thoughts are the sidestand. they had it grounded out so the dash light would go out and the bike thinks it up. i tried a number of different things with it but with no luck. ( replacement swith from yamadog is 42$ ) the other safety swith on the brake lever is intact but the clutch sensor i believe has been disengaged. (you do not have to pull in the clutch to start the bike.) i want to get the neutral switch working properly any suggestions on where to look?

Sidestand switch is a known problem on the XJ. Replacements are no longer available from Yamaha. I took my switch off, ran continuity checks on it, and found when it was working there was continuity to all 3 wires. There is a junction behind the gas tank where the switch wires connect to the main harness. I made up a 3-way jumper with 1/4 inch spade terminals and jumped the 3 connectors together. Works fine; bike thinks the side stand is always up.
Clutch lever switch/cable is still available from Yamaha, I just ordered one from Zanotti motors. Part number is: 3Y6-82917-00-00 switch, $8.31.
Neutral wire is on the bottom side of the engine near the shift drum, I remember unhooking mine when I did the tranny fix. Recall it is a green wire. Make sure this connection is clean and tight.

switch
thanks jerry, i am inclined to think i my troubles are in the clutch switch. i will check out the schematic and see. the stand switch has been bypassed and the bike thinks its up. probably the easiest solution is put a small piece of black tape over the green light and leave the hell alone since on my xj fixing one problem usually causes 2 more.
