  • No headlights

Took my bike out for a great ride today. On the way home I stopped at a red light behind another car. I did not see my lights on. I switched to high beam, and nothing. Got home and check tail lights. They were also out.
So, what is the first thing I should look for?
I'm not a mechanic, so if it's just a bulb or fuse, I can handle that. Anything else I'll have to take it to a shop.
    And ideas?
Thanks folks. btw, I was cruising on the freeway and noticed a lot of cars were passing me. I thought, hmm, I must be going less than 65. I looked at the speedometer and I was going 80!! Damn bike is so smooth I thought I was going 60.

    Check the headlight fuse first.

Check the fuse as Don says, but if you're able to, try to diagnose why that fuse blew, otherwise it may happen again. Connectors clean from headlight to tailight? Replaced the fusebox with a TC upgrade? Any wires need attention?

The headlight and gauge lights are one circuit, taillight another, and brake/turn light yet another. So if both the head and taillight are out, you have two problems. If you still have the original fuse panel in there, that's the first place to look....

I don't have a wirIng diagram in front of me, but I think there are two hots with the key switch. One is for the fuse panel and one is for the gage lights. The headlight is fused (brown?). The gage lights and runners I believe are from the blue wire. I would seem that the only common things to both of these are charging current and ground. It is something to consider but like I said, no diagram in front of me...

There's two switched hots off the early ignition switch; a blue that takes care of the taillight and front running lights (standard) and a brown (everything else). The problem is at or after the fuse panel.
