Does anyone know if I can use an 82 head and cams on an 80 engine? My head has broken and stripped out exhaust studs in it and a few of the outside valve cover bolts are stripped.

Doesn't the '82 have YICS? I'd assume you would have to plug those ports.1979 XS1100F

Correct. It'll work fine, you'll just have to plug the YICS ports off on the back side of the head. I've got pics of it and the way I did it, if you don't know what we're talking about, but I'm headed to the airport to fly to Grand Cayman. I can post pics this evening if needed.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

I have seen the pics of Tod's head..well..XJ11 engine head, with the bolts in it he describes. The engines on the XS1100 and the XJ1100 are nearly identical and the head will bolt straight on like any other XS11 head.
The method Tod used was to thread the YICS holes and put a set screw in with red locktite IIRC which are on the engine side of the head. Basically the YICS ports are in an "apron" that extends toward the carb side of the engine on the XJ heads. The holes are passages going to each intake port. Plugging off these holes makes the head the same as an XS11.
HERE is the post where he explains it and shows what he used.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The XJ1100 head will fit on any XS1100 motor, but you'll lose compression numbers if you put it on a 78/79 XS verses an 80/81 XS.
You should use the head gasket from the XS. You can use the one from the XJ, but you'll want to cut off the little extra section in back that covers the YICS ports.
DGSXER, Thank you for finding that link for me. Sitting here in the airport in Charlotte, NC. Next stop.... TROPICAL! You all have a really good day at work today!Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

No Problem Tod. I know what it is like to try to do this in the airport.
And BTW, since I am done working today, I hope your plane is delayed a few hours just for that comment. At least your not in ATL (short for Another Terminal Layover).Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

You might be able to use that. Worse-case scenario, trim it up.1979 XS1100F

Yup.. What Phil showed you is what I was saying earlier about trimming off those YICS sections of the gasket, and then it's the same as an XS.
Grand Cayman is still here. No late planes... Warm, breezy... And yes, this is jacking with me. The steering wheel is on the wrong side, the turn signal is on the wrong side, I'm driving on the wrong side of the road, and you have to watch out for frikkin iguana crossing!? Back to the beach to drink for me! : )
