    Bike number five oil pressure problems?

    I and four friends have two SF's two SH's and the problem SG got it home and got it running. It had an oil pressure gauge in the factory faring at first it read 60 psi and the when warm it went down low so I took it to our guy. He did the carb's and while they soaked he drained the gas and oil went to take the filter out and there was none. So he put a filter in and no pressure put on a new gauge on first start up we have pressure and the it drops fast. He said today he took the filter out and he has pressure 60 psi at 4000 RPM and when warm idle about 10 psi oil am ordering a new filter stem bolt we think it might be the wrong one that's on it the holes on part of it are covered by the filter seal in the
    middle ?

    Hey there Buck,

    Well, the oil pump is working about normally, folks have reported the same values up to the 60 or so psi when running, but down to 10 or so when idling after warmed up.

    You've got several of these bikes, so you should know that the filter cup needs the spring and washer to position the filter properly around the filter bolt so that the holes are inside the filter zone. The other holes outside the filter zone are the bypass ports for when the filter gets clogged , at least oil will still push thru the bypass and keep the engine lubed.

      Ok I will ask him and look in my service manual for the spring and washer if we over looked that thanks for the help.

        On my oil pressure gauge I get high 40's at startup, around 40 psi after warm-up at speeds, and at idle after warm-up it can get down into single digets.

          "According to the FSM, oil pressure at 'cruising' speed (whatever that is) should be about 40 PSI. I'm sure it goes down at lower speeds.

          The warning light comes on if pressure goes below 4 PSI, so there's obviously a pretty wide allowable 'range'. If the light isn't coming on, I wouldn't worry.

          Oil pressure gauges on bikes rarely give useful info... A oil temp gauge would be better..."

            From my experience, tickover pressure is common to be single digits.

              oil presure

              It was the wrong filter bolt someone put on from another bike bought another new one and everything is good.
