  • Oops - time for a new tire

Happened to glance at the rear tire on SWMBO's 'H this morning on my way way to town:

Oops! We've been watching this all summer, thinking she'd need a new one next spring for sure. It was only by chance that I saw this today. Guess one really should be a bit more diligent in checking tread condition.

      Pretty nice!
Sometimes they sneak up on you.
I think I can see air there between the cords.
Not even enough left for a good burnout

Happened to me once as well. Now I look careful at m tires a week or two before group rides. Mine was like that after returning from one.

          Hi Ken,
a friend told me that he deduced how his rear tire was wearing by the way his bike handled.
He knew the tire had worn bald when the bike got squirrelly on corners so then he rode careful.
He knew the cords had started showing when the tire started to hook up again.
Then he started looking at tire prices.
And I thought he was joking.

            Hi Ken,

So how old was this tire and/or how many miles were on it? I remember somewhere on the forum that there was mentioned how old a tire can get before you should replace it regardless of mileage.

Mike, whats to worry about here? I don't even see the wear-bars! Seriously, I have 4 running bikes and some get far less use than others, but I do make a point of riding them all. They are all garaged which may make a difference with degradation of the "rubber" however I think that if you put gradual wear on the tires they keep their traction properties. The only real problem that I have had is with the Bridgestone Splitfires where the sidewalls experienced checking. This occurred after only two years which I would consider normal tire life and they where on my commuters.
