  • 79 mixture screw o-ring/washer

    I recently bought a 79F that wasn't running. After opening the fuel tank and smelling more varnish than gasoline I took off the carbs and disassembled/cleaned them. I was reading this http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38 and realized my carbs didn't have an oring or washer in the mixture screw port. I read somewhere on here that an oring from McMaster-carr (PN 9263K511) will work but wanted to know where I could find washers to use. That is assuming that both are needed for 79 mikuni carbs.

    Hi Mike and welcome,
    Ken Talbot's photo array is of the 1980 + carbs (see that they have plastic floats)
    The earlier carbs on your '79 have brass floats and a different needle design that doesn't have the small washer and o-ring below the spring.
    What those early needles DO have is a very thin end that snaps off and jams in the carb body's needle port unless treated with EXTREME care.
    That is, that's what there should be if the bike still has the carbs it came with.
    Yamaha parts swap like LEGO and the dreaded PO may have swapped in later model replacements if the originals were fritzed.

      Thanks Fred. Unfortunately upon closer inspection the mixture needle is already broken off in the number 3 body. I have no clue as to how to get it out so unless anybody has any ideas I'm guessing that I'll be looking for a carb body.

        There are quite a few ways to remove a broken tip. Check it out here.

          I already tried using a small o-ring pic to push the broken tip back out. I also tried heating the body while doing this. After that didn't work I ordered a pin drill that will hopefully do the trick. I might also try using the push pin and box wrench trick. Thanks Ken.
